But if you own diversified equities, income-producing real estate, dividend stocks yielding 3–5%, maybe some commodities — uncertainty is your shopping season. Look at 2022: rising global tensions and inflation pushed both stocks and bonds down simultaneously. Many retirees saw their portfolios drop 20% or more. If you were planning to retire that year, that wasn’t an abstract lesson — it was terrifying.
Moving to safer assets isn’t about fear; it’s about risk management. If you need your money within the next 3–5 years — for retirement, a home purchase, or your child’s education — you should not expose it to large market swings. High-yield savings accounts, short-term Treasury bills yielding 4–5%, or money market funds can provide stability and liquidity. They won’t make you rich, but they won’t collapse 30% overnight either.
Diversification also matters. Historically, during severe crises, investors have flocked to U.S. Treasuries, gold, and strong currencies like the Swiss franc. During the 2008 financial crisis, long-term Treasuries actually gained value while stocks plunged over 50%.
