If you build your empire on rented land, don’t cry when the landlord raises the rent.
Rented platforms (Amazon, Shopify, YouTube, Instagram, TikTok) are accelerators — not homes. They give you traffic, distribution, and speed. I love them… for customer acquisition. But building ONLY there? That’s volunteering to be a digital sharecropper. One algorithm tweak and your "business" becomes a hobby.
Own the relationship. Own the data. Own the brand. That means email list, website, payment processing, CRM — infrastructure you control. Use rented platforms like fishing ponds, but bring the fish back to your lake. The real asset isn’t the follower count. It’s the customer list and the systems that print money without asking permission.

Don’t build your house on sand just because the rent is cheap.
Rented platforms are safer at the beginning. They handle security, hosting, traffic, and logistics. Building your own infrastructure is expensive and technically risky if you don’t have experience. What if the website fails? What if you can’t drive traffic? At least platforms provide stability and built-in customers.
Ideally, start where the risk is lower and costs are predictable. Test your idea on established platforms first. Once you have steady income and savings, then slowly invest in your own infrastructure. Don’t overextend yourself trying to control everything too early.
